Big Joe Turner Big, Bad & Blue: The Big Joe Turner Anthology - Disc 1 of 3 (1994)
Released February 1, 1994\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: This three-record anthology shows how Turner, without really ever changing his style, moved from strict Kansas City swing to pioneering rock and roll and back to basic jazzy blues. It contains 62 songs, everything from treasured hits to slow, sweltering ballads, strident uptempo wailers, moaning blues, novelty tunes and fiery pieces with lyrics and sentiments that wouldn't make it in today's environment. A comprehensive, well-written and lavishly prepared and illustrated booklet with numerous anecdotes and remembrances are the icing on a superb cake. -- Ron Wynn\n\nDirty Linen Review (August 1, 1995)\nBig Joe Turner\nThe Big Joe Turner Anthology\nRhino R2 71550(1993, recorded 1938-1983), 3CDs\nAs usual, Rhino has compiled an impeccable selection of music blanketing the career of the Boss of the Blues, Big Joe Turner (1911-1985), who honed his powerful, dynamic singing into an art during his days in Kansas City's notorious all-night jazz and blues joints. Disc one starts near the beginning of Turner's multi-faceted career, focusing on his classic blues-shouting period of the 1930s and '40s. There's some jazz singing here too, and lots of Turner performing with classic boogie-woogie pianists such as his long-time colleague Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, and others. In the late '40s, Atlantic Records chief Ahmet Ertegun signed Turner and the music behind Joe's thunderous vocals was no longer strictly blues, but rhythm & blues: part of the foundation of rock 'n' roll. All of disc two and half of disc three features the big hits which, during the '50s - and still today - prove that Turner was the greatest R&B singer of all time. His renditions of "Honey Hush," "Shake Rattle and Roll," "Crawdad Hole," "Flip Flop and Fly," "Corrine Corrina," and others, helped define both R&B and R&R. Disc three showcases four tracks each from two superb Atlantic "concept" albums: Boss of the Blues: Joe Turner Sings Kansas City Jazz (his final collaboration with Pete Johnson from 1956), and the 1960 disc of old blues and pop standards, Big Joe Rides Again (with saxman Coleman Hawkins). It concludes with a 1983 remake of "Crawdad Hole" with Turner's booming voice, still strong despite failing health, backed by Roomful of Blues. 62 tracks in all chronicle the recorded legacy of the enerjivin', hoporacious, churnicizin', volusturous, sizzlatin' Big Joe Turner. -- Al Riess\n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nJoe Turner had one of the great 50-year careers. Beginning as a blues shouter in the '30s with his partner, pianist Pete Johnson, in Kansas City bars, he recorded often in a variety of contexts: as a duo with Johnson, with honking jump-blues bands, in front of small combos in the rock & roll era, with jazz and blues groups until close to his death in 1985. Capable of handling a huge range of material from 12-bar hollers to pop ballads, Turner easily fills this three-CD set with his vast depth and humor. --Rickey Wright \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nBIG, BAD & BLUE includes a 52-page booklet featuring rare photos and a biography of Big Joe Turner.\n\nProducers include: Ahmet Ertegun, Nesuhi Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Herb Abramson, John Hammond.\n\nCompilation producer: James Austin.\nIncludes liner notes by Peter Grendysa, Ahmet Ertegun, and James Austin.\n\nRolling Stone Magazine (03/10/1994)\n...It would be hard to imagine a collection that captures the brawling majesty of Turner's voice more accurately...\n\nMusician (05/01/1994)\n...Big Joe Turner was not only the most musically exciting singer rock 'n' roll has ever produced; he was a singer whose verve and vision helped produce rock 'n' roll itself....His themes were wine, women and song...and he sang them in a way that let you know he'd researched his subjects well....great, timeless music...
