This is the third of seven albums that will present all of Billie Holiday's Verve recordings. Where possible, the volumes will further the Billie Holiday Story chronologically while ensuring that each complete session appears intact on a CD.\n\nLike the previous CD in this series, The Billie Holiday Story Volume 3 showcases Lady Day with the great Oscar Peterson. For contrast, her next session was with her favorite accompanist, pianist Bobby Tucker. By now her lifestyle was taking its toll, and her voice sounded different on each date, but her way with a lyric was more her own than ever. Such tunes as "My Man" and "Love Me or Leave Me" display the burnished voice and sensibility of the dazzling, mature artist she had become. As Donald Clarke, her latest biographer says in his liner note, "She had plenty to complain about, but she was far from helpless. She took on racism, sexism, and the music industry, and in the end she did as she pleased and mostly succeeded." YEAR: 1994
