Various Rock n' Roll Roots: The R&B Influence (2005)
Smith & Co SCCD 1105 - This is a U.K. release consisting of a collection of various Rhythm & Blues originslly released between the end of WW 2 and the "start" of Rock & Roll in the Mid 50's. This genre didn't receive wide airplay at the time, and in fact was classified as "race" music. Nonetheless, the blues base of the songs, coupled with a more uptempo shuffle beat is one of the seminal components of early rock and roll. If one listens to early rock and roll songs by white artists, the connection is unmistakable. It is indeed unfortunate that these artists did not receive wider recognition, for the majority of these songs are prime examples of pre- rock n, roll era and contributed greatly to the subsequent revolution in American music.\n\nRalph Matthews
