Gustav Mahler 1860 - 1911\nSymphony No. 10 (realized by Deryck Cooke, publ. 1976)\n\nBBC National Orchestra of Wales\nconducted by Mark Wigglesworth\n\nRecorded live in the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham,\non 26 November 1993\n\nLeft incomplete at the composer's death, Mahler's\nSymphony No. 10 was for years known only in the form of\na big Adagio with an apparently inconsequential little\nAllegretto, often omitted in performance. The English Mahler\nexpert Deryck Cooke put a stop to all that, however, by\ndiscovering that Mahler's manuscript sketches could be\nmade to yield a complete performing version of the work.\nHis realization of the full five-movement symphony was\npremiered in 1964, and it made a profound impression.\n\nSo, it transpired, Mahler had not ended his creative life in\nthe despair of the Ninth Symphony, but had won through to\na new serenity; and while only claiming to present the\nsymphony at the stage it had reached when Mahler died,\nCooke convincingly shows us the broad symphonic\nargument and the emotional world the composer had\nconceived. The symphony traces a brave journey through\nthe death-haunted nostalgia of its opening Adagio, by way\nof an exuberant Scherzo and purgatorial central intermezzo,\nto a bitter and ultimately ghostly second Scherzo. This is\nlinked by means of a 'death blow' on the bass drum to a \nfinale which retraces the work's darkest steps, but ends\nradiantly in perfect serenity.\n\nCover notes: Anthony Payne
