Konk The Sound Of Konk (Tales of The New York Underground 1981-88) (2004)
Soul Jazz Recordings 2004\nTales of the New York Underground 1981-88.\n"Soul Jazz Records are releasing this new compilation\nfrom the cult US Dance/Post-Punk group Konk.\nKonk first featured on Soul Jazz Records' earlier\nNew York Noise (which also featured Arthur Russell,\nESG and Liquid Liquid) this album compiles all their rare\nand classic material. Konk were formed in New York in 1980.\nThey played an important part in the link between New York's\nDisco scene (Paradise Garage/Loft/Gallery etc) and the\nNew York No Wave/Post-Punk scene (Liquid Liquid, ESG,\nJames White etc). This compilation brings together the classic\nKonk recordings in the 1980s from their releases on labels as\ndiverse as Rough Trade, Sleeping Bag, 99 Records,\nLes Disques Du Crepuscle and Celluloid. Konk's pioneering\ninterest in electronic and musical technology also put them at the\nforefront of the burgeoning worlds of Electro/Hip-Hop and House. \nTheir use of DJ mixers (breaking down a track to it's individual elements)\npredated the arrival of samplers and enabled DJs such as Larry Levan to\nextend their mixes to up to 25 minutes. As well as being a key group in\nNew York's Post-Punk dance scene where they regularly played alongside\ngroups such as Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, ESG, The Peech Boys and The\nLounge Lizards, Konk found favour with DJs such as David Mancuso and\nthe legendary Larry Levan and were one of a select few bands to play at\nboth the Paradise Garage and the Loft. Konk featured in it's line up members\nof Jean Michel Basquiat's band Gray, Sonic Youth and members of\nGlenn Branca's ensemble. Founding member Dana Vlcek later went\non to work with Francois Kervorkian. The wide range of it's members\nis reflected in the music which fuses Disco/Post-Punk/Electro/Latin and\nproto-House together. This new compilation makes available Konk's\nleftfield Disco classics (many for the first time in twenty years!). The album\nalso comes with extensive sleeve notes, interviews and photographs."
