George & Ira Gershwin
Great American Songwriters: George & Ira Gershwin (Vol. 1) (1993)
Released November 16, 1993\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Rhino's Great American Songwriters, Vol. 1 celebrates the talents of George and Ira Gershwin, collecting some of the finest pop and vocal jazz interpretations of their songs. Fred Astaire's quintessentially dapper reading of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," Sarah Vaughan's sassy "Nice Work If You Can Get It," and Count Basie's breezy "S' Wonderful" prove that the best-written songs showcase the singer's essential style. Peggy Lee's "The Man I Love," Sammy Davis Jr.'s "It Ain't Necessarily So," Nancy Wilson's "Someone to Watch Over Me," and Jo Stafford's "Embraceable You" are some of the other highlights from this collection of classic songwriting and performances. A must for anyone who appreciates the finest traditional pop of the 20th century. -- Heather Phares\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nSpiritless renderings, February 9, 1999 \nReviewer: A music fan from Montgomery, AL \nI was very disappointed by this cd. I expected variety in tempo and arrangement, but this group of recordings is pretty featureless. The Gershwins were always surprising, but the editors have put together good music in such a way as to put me to sleep. Separately, these cuts would be special, but together they become boring. A great pity. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nFantastic!, January 11, 1999 \nReviewer: A music fan from Woodbury, Minnesota \nThis is a wonderful CD with music we've all grown up with and are familiar with. I will be ordering two copies as it is good enough to pass along to listeners of good quality music. Generally I find that many old favorites are written by artists people think they don't know. That would definitely be the case with this CD. Some of the songs on here I didn't even realize were Gershwin songs. It was a fluke to find this and it has become a household favorite.
This jazz cd contains 20 tracks and runs 65min 16sec.
