Over the Edge Vol. 2: Pastor Dick: Muriel's Purse Fund (1995)
How Does a gospel-believing, born again Christian Pastor wind up in a drunken state for millions to\nwitness? Let me answer that question by backing up to my local radio ministry in Condord, California.\n\nAfter seven years, my 15 minute "Hour of Fellowship" broadcast on a 500-watt KWUN had failed to gain an audence.\nThis was likely due to its broadcast time of 4:30-4:50 a.m. on saturday morning. In 1982 I was contacted by Mr.\nDnald Joyce who had caught my radio message, "To Drink or Not to Drink". Imagine my delight when he invited\nme to speak on 59,000-watt KPFA, which covers northern and central California. "praise the Lord" I exclaimed, "A\nmiracle even I didn't expect! Watch out Swindall and Robison! Stand back Van Impe, and LaHaye! Pastor Dick has\narrived!" Unknown to me at that time was that, besides being a radio engineer and producer, Don was also a member\nof a so-called "noise" band known as Negetivland, and that I would be appearing on their radio show.\n\nThat night, even the wisdom of Mathew 23:12 could not stop me as I plopped down at the mike to deliver my\nmessage on "The Strong-Willed Child". My haughty spirit was soon dashed, however, as I was interrupted and\nmocked by tapes containing filthy words and sounds I'd only heard from my late wife behind lock bedroom\ndoors. Before I could regain my composure, the lines opened up and irate callers began tormenting me with\nsacrilege and personal threats. I stumbled through the next 15 minutes and then escaped, a beaten Pastor. Repeated\nhoots and hollers followed me down the stairs of KPFA - "Come Back anytime... JERK!"\n\nThe following week I almost lost my faith. I asked myself, "How can I ever get through to those crazy kids and\nreclaim my rightful pulpit in a major market?" "God is insane and we're all doomed," I replied. At the moment my\nthen secretary, Muriel Allcock, stormed into my study. "Alright, I had $180 in my purse and now it's all gone! And\nyou were the only other person here!" As she glared accusingly at me, God's answer came. I would accept those kids\njeering invitation and resurrect my dignity with a really big signal.\n\nAs you'll hear, my radio crusade was a triumph, and I haven't lacked for an audience since. It took me years to find\nout about Muriel's drug problem, but now that she's out of the picture I can share my turning point with the world.\n\nPastor Dick\n\nPASTOR DICK: MURIEL'S PURSE FUND is edited entirely from several five-hour live radio mixes originally broad-\ncast in 1982-1986. These broadcast mixes used turntable, tape decks, cart machines, microphones, live music and\neffects of all sorts. Spontaneous public access to the mix came via unscreened telephone.\n\nParticipants in the PASTOR DICK: MURIEL'S PURSE FUND were - Richard Lyons, David Wills, Don Joyce, Mark\nHosle, Chris Grigg, Helen Holt, Ian Allen and Kent Hastings. Thanks to all out anonymous callers, especially the\n"Fuck You" guy.\n
