Rhian Sheehan: Music for Nature Documentaries CD Track Listing
Rhian Sheehan
Music for Nature Documentaries (2004)
Over the past year, Wellington's Rhian Sheehan has been quietly sending out music to producers in New Zealand and overseas, and giving them a clean canvas from which to remix, mashing up and even remake some of the incredible tunes from his Tiny Blue Biosphere and Paradigm Shift albums. LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa and Rhian Sheehan are proud to bring to you the album, Music For Nature Documentaries : Rhian Sheehan Remixed. \n\nImagine if you were to reverse the flow of time... and witness the artist painting backwards from the final product to the very first step in the creative process, yet with the advantage of knowing the desired outcome in mind. Imagine if another artist was given the same brushes, paints and canvas with which to create their impression of the original work - the art resulting from this reversal in time would parallel the creations found here in Music For Nature Documentaries. \n\n"The idea came about after Sam Scott from Phoenix Foundation asked me if the band could remix my track, An Afternoon on the Moon. I was intrigued as to what the outcome might sound like. This "reconstruction" of my work became infectious. I then approached other producers in New Zealand and overseas... and the result is an album diverse in approach, yet tangible in vision". - Rhian Sheehan \n\nMusic For Nature Documentaries features 16 fresh remixes by Minuit, Gasoline Cowboy, The Phoenix Foundation, Fiord (Antix), epsilon-blue, Jet Jaguar, Age Pryor, Ekto, Agent Alvin, Module, Signer, Interfearence (UK), The Turtle Bay Country Club (Germany) and more...\n\nThe album opens up with the deep remix of Hiding Place by electro producer Hummel... before Rhian's sidekick Module utilises the haunting voice of Wellington's Jess Chambers, for his take on Hiding Place and Module's interpretation features again in Boundaries. The highly regarded Agent Alvin brings his soulful drum n bass sound for an attack on the track Cosmology, before Fiord deliver their progressive-house monster Hiding Place, for the fifth track on the album and the iconic New Zealand underground producer, epsilon-blue, adds his impression of Connected. \n\nRhian's Sunshine, with the angelic vocals of Jess Chambers, gets special attention from local producer Ekto along with the UK/US duo Interfearence whose track "All Day" features on the soundtrack to the hit movie, Human Traffic. While Nelson breaks trio Minuit merge Rhian's Phobos and Sunshine tunes together for their "There's Sunshine-in-them-there-riffs" remix. \n\nModule then utilises the unmistakable sound of Anika Moa in Te Karanga, for the tenth track. The electronic travel path through the album then dissipates with the Wellington based artist Signer remixing Sunshine, before Germany based Turtle Bay Country Club, with Onejiru, Sola Plexus and James Brown's drummer Tony Cook on the skins, get their hands on Rhian's Boundaries. New Zealand Indy-rockers Gasoline Cowboy remake Cosmology for their contribution to the album, before Wellington's Age Pryor, featuring Paul McLaney from Gramsci, provide a truly sublime take on the track, Miles Away. Melbourne based kiwi Jet Jaguar remixes An Afternoon on the Moon, before The Phoenix Foundation re-mangle the same track as only they could, to close the Music For Nature Documentaries album.\n\n(Thanks to www.thread.co.nz for the review)
