Dean Martin Pretty Baby (1957)
Pretty Baby\n2005 Collectors' Choice Music\n\nOriginally Released On June 17, 1957\nCollectors' Choice CD Edition Released March 14, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Dean Martin waited two years following Swingin' Down Yonder before recording his second full-length LP, Pretty Baby (though, of course, he recorded singles, EPs and film soundtrack material in the interim). This time, under the baton of Lee Gillette, he essayed a 12-song set of ballads, among them semi-standards (and Bing Crosby hits) like "It's Easy to Remember" and "Only Forever." He didn't seem nearly as involved as he had on the uptempo Swingin' Down Yonder, and the gimmicky female backup accompaniment undercut the romantic mood, making this a less satisfying album than it might have been. Still attempting to reconstruct his career in the wake of his breakup with Jerry Lewis, Martin doesn't seem to have focused yet on his potential as an albums artist, and this collection doesn't rank with those of competitors and labelmates like Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole. -- William Ruhlmann\n\nAmazon.com Product Description\nWhen Dean went in the studio in January 1957 to record his third album for Capitol, the pressure was really on: he had just broken off his phenomenally successful partnership with Jerry Lewis, who had gone on to record a hit album of his own for Decca. So, Dino, always deemed by the critics the less talented of the duo, really, really needed a breakthrough record. Sadly, it was not to be, but 'Pretty Baby' proved to be perhaps the finest of his Capitol releases with some of the best singing he ever did. A Collectors' Choice Music exclusive! \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nThis jazzy collection is sung in typically relaxed style by the man who typified the laid-back bon vivant for much of the 1950s and '60s. Dean Martin croons a selection of pop and jazz standards, like the title track and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," mostly accompanied by a small jazz combo augmented by horns and strings. The cover art, which features a suave Martin being admired by a pneumatic blonde, is worth the purchase price by itself.
This misc cd contains 16 tracks and runs 40min 35sec.
