Clinton Gregory was living proof that a musician need not be signed to a major record company to find success. He was born in Martinsville, Virginia, and came from a long line of fiddle players. He began playing at age three and made his performing debut at bluegrass festivals within a year. He went to Nashville at age 12, where his father was playing at the Grand Ole Opry after winning a fiddling contest. While there, young Gregory met stars like Marty Robbins, Roy Acuff and Lester Flatt, who inspired him to become a professional musician. Gregory returned to Nashville in 1987 to play fiddle with Suzy Bogguss' band. Eighteen months later, he joined the McCarters, a sister trio with whom he occasionally sang. His first single for independent label Step One, the title track of his 1990 debut album, Music 'N Me, went nowhere; however, the next single, "Couldn't Love Have Picked a Better Place to Die," made it to the Top 70. Gregory's second album produced his first Top 30 hit, "If It Weren't for Country Music (I'd Go Crazy)," and two other medium-level hits. His 1992 album Freeborn Man did even better and produced two Top 30 hits, including "Who Needs It." In 1994, Gregory left Step One and signed with Polydor Nashville after his 1993 singles did moderately well on the charts.
