Jim & Jesse Y'All Come: The Essential Jim & Jesse (1998)
Originally Released January 27, 1998\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Y'All Come: The Essential Jim & Jesse is a 20-track collection that culls highlights from the duo's decade at Epic Records in the '60s, featuring such hits and favorites as "Better Times A-Coming," "Ballad of Thunder Road," "Yonder Comes a Freight Train," "She Left Me Standing on the Mountain," "Stay a Little Longer," "Memphis Tennessee" and "Truck Drivin' Man." This isn't the set for traditional bluegrass fans, although there is plenty of that. Instead, the set is divided between bluegrass and the duo's brief flirtation with straight-ahead country, giving a good picture of their time at Epic. Either way, it's a fine set, showcasing some of the best music Jim & Jesse ever recorded, and it's one of the best anthologies of their Epic years yet assembled. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine\n\nAmazon.com essential recording\nThe McReynolds brothers made their biggest impact by combining the sound of traditional bluegrass with other elements of country music. This 20-song collection covers their 1960s association with Epic, when the duo allowed their array of influences to shine through and added drums and electric instruments to their sound. Three Louvin Brothers favorites accompany assorted gospel numbers, a pair of Chuck Berry covers, a Bob Wills standard, hard-driving songs of trains and trucks, and some straight bluegrass. Fans of traditional bluegrass will prefer their earlier Capitol work to this greatest-hits package, but Jim's immaculate tenor vocals, Jesse's innovative mandolin technique, and the pair's natural harmonies are all on display here. --Marc Greilsamer \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nLove it!, June 15, 2003\nReviewer: Robert Miller (Eastern USA)\nOn a garage sale haunt a few years ago, I got a country collection LP with a Jim & Jesse song called Diesel on my tail. One of the best country tunes I ever heard - should have been included on this collection. I am more into country than bluegrass; that being said, I love this cd 100%. The Chuck Berry tunes work perfectly as country/bluegrass. The minor key Thunder Road is fantastic, Ole Slew Foot, Rabbit in the log are great numbers as well. The banjo/mandolin/guitar playing is virtuoso, the singing is what is known as seamless harmonies. The later songs on this collection are very similar to Commander Cody/Charlie Daniels, especially Hot Rod Race 2 & Yonder comes a freight train. There's a lot to recommend here - great collection, great artists. Love them to death! Better than Bill Monroe!\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nMisleading Title, April 23, 2002\nReviewer: Cory L. Schwent (Bloomsdale, MO United States)\n"The Essential?" Hmm I don't think this is "the essential" Hardly any of their well known songs. I didn't need their version of "Ole Slewfoot". But the thing is, this is the only domestic release of any of their Columbia recordings. So I guess this is all we get.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nPure sounding bluegrass with that downhome flavor, December 3, 1998\nReviewer: A music fan\nFrom the mountains of southwest Virginia to stages all over the world, Jim & Jeese McReynolds and the Virginia Boys have kept the great sounds of Pure Bluegrass going strong. This CD will make you feel like dancing and shouting hee haw. It's the best of two fine gentleman and their great band. Thanks guys for all those great sounds.\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nA best-of documenting the '60s Columbia/Epic tenure of one of country music's true class acts, this is as eclectic a collection as it gets--there's straight bluegrass, country/pop, gospel, rock & roll (two Chuck Berry songs), and even a faux folk song by Robert Mitchum ("The Ballad of Thunder Road"). The glue holding it all together, of course, is Jim and Jesse Montgomery's spellbinding Louvin Brothers-inspired harmonies, on songs like "She Left Me Standing on the Mountain" and "Kneel at the Cross." Jesse's virtuoso mandolin work just about everywhere. In particular, don't miss "The South Bound Train," which the duo renders at an alarmingly full-throttle pace.
This misc cd contains 20 tracks and runs 47min 35sec.
