The Jacksons Live (Japanese Pressing) (1981)
Originally Released 1981\nCD Edition Released July 1984\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: It's easy to forget, in the wake of a decade of bizarre behavior, rumors, and innuendo surrounding Michael Jackson that the Jacksons were once known solely for being a major music franchise. This live album, which was pretty obscure in its original double-LP vinyl version, is a reminder of how great an act they were, and captures what was just about the end of Michael Jackson's work with the family group, all of it very much on a high-note. Live opens with a pounding, powerful rendition of "Can You Feel It" and, with one exception, never lets up, pushing on through a high-velocity and high-articulation version of "Things I Do for You," and a soaring "Off the Wall." There's an unfortunate lag where Michael Jackson slows things down for "Ben" (arguably the nadir of his Motown career), but "This Place Hotel" and the far more effective ballad "She's Out of My Life" make up for that lapse. The last section of the album, commencing with Off the Wall's "Rock With You," is practically a live rendition of that album, and so bracing as to almost exhaust the listener; and the preceding medley of their early Motown hits is just about worth the asking price of the disc by itself. On the down side, there are no notes and barely any credits, and the volume is set a bit low, but it pumps up beautifully with virtually no excess noise. The album is worth tracking down as an artifact of a simpler, more unabashedly joyous time in music, as well as the family's history. -- Bruce Eder\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGet down and get funky with the Jacksons!, February 14, 2006\nReviewer: andy8047 (Nokomis,Florida)\nThousands of fans spent one or more special evenings in the company of Michael,Jermaine,Marlon,Jackie and Tito Jackson. The brothers were promoting their TRIUMPH album and Michael was promoting his solo megahit OFF THE WALL. Listeners, present or not at these performances, can get down and get funky to songs like CAN YOU FEEL IT and THIS PLACE HOTEL from TRIUMPH and ROCK WITH YOU,WORKING DAY AND NIGHT and the title track from OTW. Michael had just risen to fame as a solo performer although he had a few solo hits prior to OFW. Jermaine was enjoying success as a solo performer also. Get down and funky also to SHAKE YOUR BODY DOWN TO THE GROUND from 1978's DESTINY. There's also a few Jackson 5 hits such as I'LL BE THERE. BEN,Michael's inaugural solo hit, would be recycled for the 2003 compilation,NUMBER ONES. If you heard and loved the Bee Gees' ONE NIGHT ONLY,you'll love this album! So play this one and SHAKE YOUR BODY DOWN TO THE GROUND!\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nShake Your Body!!!, October 19, 2005\nReviewer: Marlon Jackson "Dancing Machine" (Capitol Heights, MD USA)\nI wish I could see this whole concert on dvd or tv or something, because by the way it sounds on cd,it sounded like it turned out really good. The opening intro to Can You Feel It is a great way for the brothers to come out and sing. All of the "fast" songs are....well....fast paced as I noticed that the beat to Can You Feel It sounds almost like a church song ('scuse me Lord). While the songs,"Things I Do For You" and "Off The Wall" go hand-in-hand pretty good together on this album,it's a suprise to me that Michael slips a little on his performance of "Ben",i think they should've put either "Push Me Away" or the remixed version of "Blame It On The Boogie" (which is a really really good remix by the way). "Heartbreak Hotel" is also on here but it doesn't sound as good as it does on the Triumph album or the later live version that Michael did on the 1987 Bad Tour - but oh well. The funniest moment on this album is when Michael sings "She's Out Of My Life" and you can hear the ladies just lose their minds and slide right out of their panties when he gets closer to the edge of the stage and cries. Whether it was staged or not,Michael Jackson knows how to entertain his fans anyway he can. Then they go into a brief argument about the old days and interact with crowd as well. I was suprised to even hear Tito Jackson do an outburst cause he seems so quiet. After the brothers bicker with Michael, they finally break into the infamous J5 Medley of "I Want You Back","ABC","The Love You Save",and "I'll Be There". But in this medley (which you get to hear for the first time) Michael and Marlon do the vocal trade just like Michael and Jermaine use to do in the early years. Marlon Jackson does a good job of not trying to sound like Jermaine in the medley and pretty much holds his own on it. After "I'll Be There" comes the best version of "Rock With You" I've ever heard. Thanks to the extended ending on the song where Tito,Marlon,Jackie, and Randy follow Michael's ever-changing lead in the ending until he decides to hold a note for a little bit then runs behind his microphone stand to breakout another good follow-up song to "Rock With You" - the infectious "Lovely One". This is absolutely THE BEST done over single on the Live album. The album - to my suprise - begins to slack up when the brothers do "Working Day and Night" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough",I'm not sure why but it just didn't sound fitting, but hey feel free to disagree with me. Finally,we reach the end of the album as the brothers close the show out with "Shake Your Body Down To The Ground",and then it's time to say goodbye to all their company. T-H-E J-A-C-K-S-O-N-S,GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY!!!\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGreat show, but meant to be seen, July 10, 2003\nReviewer: Kyle (Minnesota)\nThe Jacksons' 1981 live album is an audio snapshot (too bad there isn't a video release!) of their award-winning "Triumph" world tour. The opening built so much suspense in anticipating the show's commencement, and the cheers from the crowd leave you guessing what was happening visually. "Can you feel it" opens the concert and is slightly different than the album version; though it has less punch than the album version, it is taken faster and is more suited for high-energy Jackson shows. Having the Jackson brothers sing backup for Michael's "Off the Wall" numbers turned out pretty well. As much as the group was pressing their current offerings ("Triumph," "Destiny," and "Off the Wall"), it is clear that the fans got the biggest thrill from the Motown songs. The Jacksons performed all four #1 Motown hits, as well as Michael's #1 "Ben." Although awkard at times with their older voices and Marlon's delivery of Jermaine's former solo lines, the songs are nice. Other than "Can you feel it," several other songs were performed faster than the album versions. "This Place Hotel" and "Lovely One" sound great this way. Also, "Shake Your Body," "Lovely One" and "I'll Be There" feature nice vocal improvs; on the other hand, a few tracks differ very little from the album versions. As the only live album easily available from the Jackson boys, it is worth a listen, but don't look at is a definitive statement of their musical output.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe Jacksons, totally live and totally off the hook!, January 18, 2003\nReviewer: The Fancy One "blackprincess" (New York, NY)\nHaving seen this concert live at NYC's Madison Square Garden back in the day, it just brings back so many good memories to hear it coming through my stereo. There was so much energy in the guys' performance, and although it was pretty much the Michael Jackson show (he brought down the house when he sang "She's Out of My Life" and asked "Can I come down there?"), it was plain to see that all of these guys were born to entertain. One of the happiest moments of my life was being in the audience that night to witness this concert! If you are a Jackson fan, you MUST own this!!!\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nWorship at the feet of the King of Pop!!!, May 2, 2002\nReviewer: A music fan\nMichael Jackson has the most amazing voice I have ever heard. It's so beautiful and powerful that it sends shivers down your spine and brings tears to your eyes at the same time.\nTo hear his voice live is a real treat. It sounds best in "Ben" and his solo at the end of "I'll Be There".\nThe CD is a fantastic collection of Jacksons hits, featuring the highlights of the Jackson 5, Jacksons and Michael's solo album, Off the Wall, which in my opinion is his best to date. Every song is fantastic and the CD benefits from the supreme talent of Michael Jackson combined with the musical ability of his brothers, particularly Randy (a talented multi-instrumentalist and a fantastic singer) and Tito, whose conga and guitar solos in Working Day and Night are unbelievable and you'll find yourself listening to them many times over. Marlon shines in his own right as he sings Jermaine's lines in the Jackson 5 medley, but Jackie's only contribution is some "interesting" shirtless photos in the album sleeve!\nOverall, an unmissable collection of songs, "thrilling" from start to finish and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever admired any of the Jackson brothers. Every song is addictive.\nMichael's voice is unbelievable..\nWorship at the feet of the King of Pop!!!\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nLive On The Floor, July 18, 2001\nReviewer: Thomas Magnum (NJ, USA)\nThis album is technically a Jacksons' release, but as evident by the songs included, it is really Michael's show. Of the album's thirteen tracks, five of them are from Michael's Off The Wall album (a sixth solo song, the chestnut "Ben" is also included) and the remaining tracks are dominated by his presence. This isn't a bad thing as the album provides early proof of the electricity Michael could create from the stage. The remaining Jackson brothers are no slouches either as they provide perfect harmonies and vocals while leading us through a mostly uptempo selection of songs like the blazing "The Things I Do For You" and a funky "Lovely One". A real treat is to hear the band dive into the vaults for a rousing medley of "I Want You Back/ABC/The Love You Save" and a sweet "I'll Be There".\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nA Must for a Jacksons Fan!!!, August 5, 1999\nReviewer: Ms. YoMo (Annapolis, MD)\nOverall, this is one of the best live albums I've ever owned. If you are a fan of the Jacksons, Michael Jackson, the Jackson 5, of whatever other variation, the you will enjoy this. From "Can you Feel It" to "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground", you will find one of the best collections of Jacksons hits - all sung live. You will dance to "Heartbreak Hotel" and feel like your heart is breaking with "She's Out of My Life". You can listen to this the entire way from beginning to end and enjoy every little moment in between. The only drawback is that, when listening to it, you will wish you could see everything as well.\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nIt certainly sounds like the audience is having a spectacular time at this explosive evening. Mixing hits from Michael's OFF THE WALL (which get the biggest screams) with their then-current hits such as "Shake Your Body," "Lovely One," and "Heartbreak Hotel," the Jacksons provide sheer entertainment.\nAn introduction via video clip of the boys' early-'70s performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" leads to the present day brothers breaking in and faux-begging Michael to perform that material--Michael's protestations that "the stuff is old" only adds to the fever which greets him as he performs "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save." The adult Jacksons here tweak their boyhood material, providing an opportunity to hear the group at its best.\n YEAR: 1981
