Cheech & Chong Where There's Smoke There's Cheech & Chong (Disc 1) (2002)
Where There's Smoke There's Cheech & Chong - Disc 1 of 2\n2002 Warner Bros. / Rhino\n\nOriginally Released March 19, 2002\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: This double-CD anthology of Cheech & Chong's work properly leans on the albums they did for Ode in the early and mid-'70s, adding a few tracks from their late-'70s/early-'80s stint on Warner Bros. and the 1985 single (and small pop hit) "Born in East L.A." It being a Rhino compilation, you naturally get a few extras, too: the non-LP 1971 Christmas single "Santa Claus and His Old Lady," two commercials for the Up in Smoke film, a concert commercial (with the Tyrone Shoelaces character of "Basketball Jones" fame), and a 1972 live sketch, "Old Man in the Park" (which was never included on any of their albums). There are also extensive liner notes by Barry Hansen (aka Dr. Demento), who of course has played many of those songs over the years on his radio show. But overall this stuff is more juvenile than it is funny. Actually, the duo had (just a bit) more range than they were given credit for, with a facility for musical satire in cuts like the elderly bluesman parody "Blind Melon Chitlin'," the update of Leiber & Stoller's "Framed," the Top Ten hit "Earache My Eye" (possibly an influence on Spinal Tap in its use of a fake bad heavy metal record by Alice Bowie), and "Basketball Jones." They were pretty deft at inserting sound effects and layering voices, though not to anywhere near the profound end that the Firesign Theatre and Monty Python did. And it's surprising how many of these songs were actually Top 100 chart hits -- no less than eight of them. You do wonder who the core audience of this retrospective is going to be -- present-day kids might actually find the junior high-level drug humor that dominates the material tame. That leaves it to the people who, um, grew up on these albums when they were in junior high school in the 1970s. And if there are a whole lot of people that are still into Cheech & Chong as adults, doesn't that say something rather peculiar about a segment of our culture? -- Richie Unterberger\n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nWhen they are on, Cheech and Chong fill a glass with the absurd and toss in a twist of mordant wit. In a sketch familiar to many, Cheech has this to say about Santa Claus: "Everywhere he went he ran into too much recession, man." Chong points out, "No, man, you mean he ran into too much repression, man." "Recession, repression, man... It's all the same thing, man," Cheech responds. Their style is relentlessly repetitious and off-the-cuff, affording them ample opportunity for casual and delicious sarcasm by which the listener is taken completely off-guard. Even the album's title embodies the pith of this album; like their sketches, it points out the obvious in a way that is rarely done--in their patented, stoner-speak style. Cheech and Chong have long been a near ubiquitous presence because practically all potheads--current or reformed--have encountered their movies and records. While the size of this collection makes listening to the whole thing at one sitting a bit of a chore, the intent seems to be to make the whole catalog available to fans, and at least parts of it are sure to appeal to both practical and metaphorical "smokers." --Mark Huntsman \n\nAlbum Description\n'Where There's Smoke There's... Cheech & Chong' features over 2 1/2 hours of their best recordings & comedy routines, including unreleased material on 2 CD's. Rhino Records.\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nUh, man, bummer. You get burned by this CD! Skip it..., March 31, 2003 \nReviewer: Jac in Tucson from Tucson, AZ United States \nMan, talk about being burned. This two-CD best of is, well, a bit pricey for two CDs, first, and even worse, what you pay for is a junk that goes up in smoke on CD 2. CD1 is a classic. It's to bad the record company didn't just expand Cheech and Chongs Greatest Hit, instead of going for a two-CD collection. CD1 has all the good stuff and CD2, well, it's OK at the start but then it turns really boring and you know they're scraping the bottom of the barrel when they have "Born in East L.A." on this. Fortnately, Santa Claus and His Old Lady is on CD 1, so as people wise up and use CD2 for coasters, they can still crank up the ol' Christmas classic for a new generation. This ranks three stars. Had it just been CD1, it would have ranked 5 big stars. And there's a bongload full of good stuff on CD1. Got someone you hate? Give 'em CD2 for a gift... My recommendation: pick up Los Cochinos and Greatest Hit (for less money, too!) and have yourself a party. \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nFull title: Where There's Smoke There's Cheech & Chong.
