Various Artists The Best of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, Vol. 1 (1988)
The Best of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, Vol. 1\n1988 Rhino Records, Inc\n\nOriginally Released 1988\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The Best of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, Vol. 1 is an incredible collection of 18 of the greatest Crescent City R&B singles ever released. Divided equally between classics ("Mother-In-Law," "It Will Stand," "I Hear You Knocking," "I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday," "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)," "A Certain Girl," "One Night," "Ooh Poo Pah Doo [Pt. 1]"), and terrific but frequently underappreciated singles from the likes of the Spiders, Irma Thomas, Aaron Neville, Earl King, and Dave Bartholomew, the collection is a concise and utterly intoxicating overview of New Orleans R&B, one that appeals not only to neophytes, but also to collectors. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nWHY DON'T YOU OWN THIS!!?!, December 15, 2004 \nReviewer: Eclectic Revisited "Charlie" (Arizona)\nI admit it: I always liked "A Certain Girl" by Ernie K-Doe which never made the big time. And wasn't he Lee Dorsey anyway? No, but they both worked with Musicmeister Allen Toussaint way down yonder in New Orleans. This package is replete with music from the Big Easy. Smiley Lewis with the original and racier version of "One Night" that Elvis Presley co-opted plus "I Hear You Knocking" (which Gale Storm recorded), Benny Spellman with 1962's "Lipstick Traces" and "Fortune Teller", Irma Thomas with the original "Time is On My Side" (which the Rolling Stones overshadowed with their cover when any British group was worshiped)--they are all here. And there is MUCH more. I hope a lot of people discover and buy this because it is great and it is HISTORY. \n\nHalf.com N/A
